Departure From Good Governance In Kenya

That this House, recalling the resumption of international aid to Kenya following the multi-party general election, notes with great concern the allegations of widespread electoral malpractice during the Lugari by-election, the statements by church leaders concerning ethnic clashes in Burnt Forest, the presence of security personnel at church services and other political meetings, the continuous interference with opposition Members of Parliament including stifling their efforts to hold public meetings, the harassment of the press in reporting such events, and specifically the arrests of journalists from The Standard and most recently the arrest of Mutigi Njau, News Editor at the Daily Nation; and urges Her Majesty's Government and the international community to monitor the adherence of the Kenyan government to the standards of 'good governance' to which it is committed.
