County Hall

EDM number 1084 in 1993-94, proposed by Tony Banks on 20/04/1994.

That this House deplores the involvement of Mr Richard Branson in the conversion of County Hall into an hotel and leisure complex by a Japanese property company; reminds Mr Branson of the political controversy still surrounding the abolition of the Greater London Council by Margaret Thatcher and the deep offence felt by many Londoners that County Hall was sold to Japanese speculators against a bid from the London School of Economics to convert County Hall into a seat of learning; notes with distaste the proposal to create within the complex a sea-life centre knowing the distress thus caused to sea creatures; and calls upon Mr Branson to find alternative headline-grabbing stunts rather than aiding and abetting the Japanese in ripping off a prime London building paid for by Londoners to be the home of city-wide local government.
