Conduct Of The Hon. Member For Banff And Buchan

That this House notes with distaste the shallow opportunism of the honourable Member for Banff and Buchan in seeking to draw an analogy between democratic standards in Scotland and South Africa; draws his attention to the fact that universal adult suffrage has existed in Scotland, as in the rest of Britain, since 1928 during which time the Scottish electorate has consistently exercised its democratic right to consider and reject at the ballot box the honourable Gentleman's party and its central political aim; notes in contrast that generations of black people in South Africa have been denied the right to vote, solely on grounds of race; believes that there are no grounds at all for comparisons between democratic standards in Scotland and South Africa; and condemns such self-delusory nonsense as offensive to black South Africans who have suffered the oppression of apartheid, which is mercifully beyond the experience or comprehension of most Scots.
