Green Transport Week

That this House notes that transport is one of the major causes of environmental damage and that the number of cars on British roads is increasing and that in Europe each day more cars are being made than the number of babies born; further notes that the richest 6 per cent. of the planet now uses a car daily and that this consumes 80 per cent. of the world's non-renewable energy and that this situation is unsustainable; supports the work of the Environmental Transport Association in organising Green Transport Week and its other awareness-raising work and endorses ETA's aims that priority be given to the most environmentally friendly forms of transport, such as walking, cycling, trains and buses, that villages, towns and cities should be places where everyone, including children and elderly and disabled people, can move freely and safely, that standards be set for clean air and a reduction in greenhouse and acid rain gases from exhaust emissions, that reliable, attractive and affordable rail and bus services should be available, that more goods should be transported by rail and water, that environmental technology in the motor industry should be promoted and that the national heritage should be protected from the damaging effects of transport; and calls on the Government to implement a transport strategy commensurate with these aims.
