Animal Transport Manifesto

EDM number 145 in 1993-94, proposed by Elliot Morley on 01/12/1993.

That this House congratulates Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, Compassion in World Farming and the RSPCA on their initiative in publishing a manifesto calling for improvements in the long distance transportation of farm animals; notes that in their August report the Commission of the European Communities described long distance transport as resulting in a very poor welfare and often in high mortality and admitted that Community laws on feeding and watering are systematically flouted; believes that animals should be slaughtered as near as possible to the farm on which they have been reared; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to press upon the United Kingdom's European Union partners to adopt an eight-hour journey limit for animals being transported for slaughter.
