Threat To Barnsley Region From Mine Water Pollution
EDM number 1474 in 1993-94, proposed by Michael Clapham on 06/07/1994.
That this House is gravely concerned at the threat to the Barnsley region from minewater pollution because of British Coal's decision to stop pumping at abandoned mine workings in the area; notes that already there has been a substantial cut in the volume of water in the feeder stream to Worsborough reservoir, reducing its ability to dilute effluent from nearby sewerage works and thereby creating the potential for an environmental disaster at the reservoir which is also the source of the River Dove; and calls on the Government to facilitate British Coal to continue pumping operations and to direct Yorkshire Water to clean up their sewerage discharges to an acceptable environmental level as soon as possible.
