Sex Tourism
EDM number 257 in 1993-94, proposed by David Alton on 14/12/1993.
That this House recognises the increasing prevalence of sex tourism; notes that the British Government has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and that Article 34 of the said convention calls for international co-operation to protect children worldwide from all forms of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse; calls upon the British Government to fulfil its obligations under the said Article, such action to include the enactment of laws conferring jurisdiction on the British courts to try British nationals and residents for sexual offences against children abroad; notes that similar laws have been passed in Germany and are likely to be passed in Australia; and urges the British Government to suggest closer liaison between British law enforcement agencies and other law enforcement agencies abroad in order to combat child prostitution.
