Slaughter Of Animals

That this Housee congratulates the Compassion in World Farming Trust on its report highlighting the fact that a significant number of animals slaughtered in United Kingdom abattoirs are in danger of regaining consciousness during bleeding out; notes with concern the results of a pig abattoir survey carried out by scientists from the University of Bristol; is appalled that the majority of abattoirs surveyed were using stunning currents below those set out in the Ministry of Agriculture's Code of Practice; notes with alarm that a large number of pigs are ineffectively stunned due to the electric tongs being placed on the wrong head position; is concerned that many pigs have to be stunned a second time and that some are recovering from the stun at the time of throat cutting; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government urgently to strengthen the law designed to minimise the suffering of animals at slaughter.
