Female Infanticide In China

That this House condemns the appalling practice in China of condemning baby girls to their deaths by placing them in so-called 'orphanages' such as the one in Nanning, Guanxi Province, Southern China, where they are left to die purely because they are of the female sex; notes that the Chinese Government has a 'policy' of one couple per child, and that in many rural areas newborn baby girls are often not registered with the authorities, and that the 1990 census revealed that 500,000 to 600,000 girls had simply disappeared; views with grave apprehension the fact that five million British subjects will be handed over to the Chinese authorities in 1997; and urges Her Majesty's Government to undertake appropriate measures to ensure that this barbaric practice is not extended to the people of Hong Kong.
