Execution Of Mehdi Dibaj In Iran
EDM number 317 in 1993-94, proposed by David Alton on 11/01/1994.
That this House notes the decision of the Iranian courts to impose a sentence of capital punishment on the prisoner of conscience, the Reverend Mehdi Dibaj, who is due to be executed this week; notes that he was found guilty of converting to the Christian faith; that he was subsequently imprisoned for eight years, two of which were in solitary confinement in cells without natural daylight; further notes that he has been subjected to mock executions; believes that the right to freely determine personal religious faith must be a matter for each individual; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to make immediate representations to secure the commutation of this harsh and inhuman decision.
