Wandsworth Council

EDM number 353 in 1993-94, proposed by Peter Hain on 14/01/1994.

That this House, noting the investigation by the District Auditor into the way the London Borough of Westminster gerrymandered local elections by the sale of empty council houses to Conservative Party supporters, calls for a similar investigation by the District Auditor into Wandsworth Council's house sales policy, noting that like Westminster, Wandsworth was virtually unique in that half the total council homes sold were empty properties to new residents who were overwhelmingly Conservative supporters, rather than to sitting tenants, and that in the case of West Hill and Parkside at least, this policy transformed once Labour marginals into relatively safe Conservative wards, enabling Wandsworth to remain Conservative in 1986 and 1990 quite against the national trend; and further calls for a statement by the Prime Minister on this flagrant abuse of the democratic process by leading Conservatives.
