Low Pay And The Abolition Of The Wages Council
EDM number 602 in 1993-94, proposed by Alex Carlile on 11/02/1994.
That this House commends the report by the Low Pay Network entitled, 'What Price Abolition? A Survey of the Pay Rates in Former Wage Council Sectors'; notes that the survey concluded that wage rates for former wage council sector jobs have already decreased dramatically, by up to 22.6 per cent.; abhors this trend and believes that a decrease in wages for already poorly paid employment is in the long term detrimental to the economy and likely to cause unacceptable financial hardship for over two million workers; and urges Her Majesty's Government to reinstate the wages councils.
