Protecting The Commercial Life Of Town Centres

That this House recognises markets are a traditional part of town life and is gravely concerned that proposals to deregulate local authority market franchise rights will result in a spread of markets outside towns which will siphon trade away from town centres posing a threat to their viability, add to the already growing problems of the unofficial economy, and frustrate the efforts of trading standards officers and environmental health officers to protect the public; and therefore calls on Her Majesty's Government to retain market franchise rights to protect the public and the commercial life of town centres.
