Anniversary Of Armenian Genocide In Turkey
EDM number 1018 in 1994-95, proposed by Paddy Tipping on 21/04/1995.
That this House recalls with sadness the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the 1915 Armenian genocide, which falls on 24th April 1995, when at least 1.5 million Armenians were systematically exterminated by the Turkish government; condemns Turkey's continuing denial that the Armenian genocide ever occurred and Turkey's persistent harassment of its minorities, despite the fact that it aspires to join the European Community and other Western organisations; calls on the government of Turkey to acknowledge its role in the Armenian genocide and to ensure that similar gross violations of human rights against minorities in Turkey today are ended and that the blockade of humanitarian aid to the Republic of Armenia is lifted; and encourages Her Majesty's Government to urge the Turkish authorities to take such action.
