TUC REPORT: HARD LABOUR - BRITAIN'S LONGER WORKING WEEK

That this House applauds the recently published TUC Report, Hard Labour - Britain's Longer Working Week, which revealed that more than one in four British full time employees currently work 48 hours per week, an increase of 20 per cent in the last 10 years; notes that the document also reveals that, according to the Government's own labour force survey, employers in the United Kingdom are largely not now reporting these increased numbers of working hours, especially amongst non manual workers who are rarely paid overtime; is further horrified to learn that at the moment 28 per cent of Britain's full time employees work excessive house compared to only 11 per cent in the rest of the European Union; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to at last realise such conditions aren't good enough for British workers, as long working hours are detrimental to the health and safety of employees, the productivity of companies and undermine family life; and urges the immediate endorsement of the European Union's Working Time Directive to restrict such practices by United Kingdom employers on their work force.
