Community Radio

That this House welcomes the growth in community radio projects serving neighbourhood and communities of interest; applauds the success of the restricted service licence category in the Broadcasting Act 1990 which has provided opportunity for these groups to operate temporary radio services; is pleased that the Radio Authority has issued 869 such licences in the period 1991 to 1994; regrets that these licences are generally limited to 28 days; and, in view of the proposed ch anges to media ownership regulations, calls upon the Government to introduce a separate category of 'Community Service' licences for non-commercial users who wish to operate full-time community radio services.
