That this House congratulates the organisation Local Action for Textiles on its recent lobby of Parliament and its publication of the excellent document, Give us a Sporting Chance, which highlighted the importance of the British apparel and textiles industries, raised awareness of the problems they face and identified the need for them to gain a competitive advantage in the changing global markets of the 1990s; notes that these industries collectively, annually account for over ú15 billion of sales with nearly ú5 billion of these goods being exported and that they are indirectly responsible for millions of United Kingdom jobs and directly more than 400,000 jobs in the United Kingdom, many of which are situated in regions which have for many years borne the brunt of closure, unemployment and recession; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to act immediately in support of these industries so that they will be able to meet the challenges that lie ahead.
