EDM number 1264 in 1994-95, proposed by Harry Barnes on 15/06/1995.
That this House congratulates People First for its effective work as an organisation run by people with learning difficulties in support of other people with learning difficulties; commends it for its training programme which helps people to develop their skills and gain in self-confidence; supports its Young People First Project which encourages people with learning difficulties to speak out for their rights; compliments it upon producing a range of accessible books using pictures and easy-to-read texts on subjects including Sexuality and Safer Sex, Speaking Up, Community Care Assessment, Making Choices of Community Care Services, Black Peoples Rights and on the Civil Rights (Disabled Persons) Bill; acknowledges the importance of its Make-It-Easy First Project which also produces information in an accessible format; believes that it is unacceptable for people with learning difficulties to be placed in positions where they are dependent upon charity; and calls upon the Government to consult with People First and other organisations of people with learning difficulties on appropriate policies, in particular and as a matter of urgency in adding full civil rights for people with learning difficulties into the Government's Disability Discrimination Bill which should be produced in an accessible format following the patterns used by People First in its own publications.
