Reduction In Local Government Expenditure And Coventry

That this House notes the AMA Report into lack of central Government funding for vital services; recognises that the poorest paid council employees in Coventry could lose as much as ú20 per week, that unemployment in Coventry has risen by 3.5 per cent. in the last three months, that the Government's proposed increase in public expenditure of 3.5 per cent. cannot be met by the proposed 0.5 per cent. increase in local expenditure, that vital services such as fire, education and social services will be reduced and that reserves are being drawn upon to dangerously low levels; demands that the Government ends its cuts in local government expenditure, demands the Government reverses its policy of reducing funding to areas such as Coventry; demands that the Government ends its policy of capping local authorities such as Coventry; and further demands that it allows them to use revenue from the sale of council houses to provide homes for the homeless, and that it restores Coventry's funding levels to meet the needs of people of Coventry, bearing in mind that local authorities such as Coventry have lost because of Government changes in the SSA formula anywhere from ú200 million upwards under the old formula.
