Conduct Of The Attorney General And The Case Of Brendan Smyth
EDM number 34 in 1994-95, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 17/11/1994.
That this House considers that it is not only the Irish Republic's Attorney General who failed to fulfil his obligations in respect of the extradition warrants delivered to the Garda by the Royal Ulster Constabulary on 29 April 1993 in respect of the now convicted child sex abuser Brendan Smyth but that the British Attorney General also failed to demonstrate any iritation, let alone anger, at the stonewalling by the Irish Republic's most senior law officer to the reasonable request from a friendly neighbouring state that Brendan Smyth be extradited to face grave charges that were far removed from having even the remotest political connotations; considers that the Right honourable and learned Member for Mid Bedfordshire be invited to reflect as to whether or not in his stewardship of the Department and office of Attorney General he has demonstrated a sufficient degree of concern and support for the police and, more importantly, the children abused and their parents; and invites him along with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to make a full and frank statement to the House as to when and to what extent they pressed the authorities in Dublin to fulfil their obligations to justice.
