Cites Appendix Ii Listing For Brazilian Mahogany
EDM number 35 in 1994-95, proposed by Alan Meale on 17/11/1994.
That this House registers its grave concern at the over-exploitation, environmental and social devastation and illegal activities associated with the trade in Brazilian mahogany; notes that scientific evidence suggests that current utilisation of Brazilian mahogany, botanical name Swietenia macrophylla, is incompatible with the long term survival of the species Swietenia macrophylla; and consequently calls on Her Majesty's Government to support the listing of Brazilian mahogany, Swietenia macrophylla, under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, mindful that this is not a trade ban, at the 9th Conference of the Parties of CITES taking place from 7th to 18th November.
