Future Of BBC Radio Cumbria

That this House recognises the valuable community based service provided over many years by BBC Radio Cumbria; notes with concern proposals by the BBC to substantially reduce the resources available to BBC Radio Cumbria in the next financial year with the loss of both technical, administrative and reporting jobs; believes this will adverslely affect the quality of the station's output and its ability to meet the need for local coverage in such a large and diverse county as Cumbria; regards these proposals as inconsistent with the statements in 'People and Programmes - BBC radio and television for an age of choice' published this month which called for the Corporation to recognise the strong audience demand for 'localness' and a better reflection of community identity; and therefore calls on the BBC to withdraw its present proposals and work to maintain the station's existing output in the north, west and south of the county.
