Threat To BBC Local Radio
EDM number 715 in 1994-95, proposed by Austin Mitchell on 01/03/1995.
That this House recognises the importance of BBC local radio as the corporation's roots in the community, its most effective training ground, its front line in service and news both local and national and as an informative and effective competitor for commercial local radio; knowing that quality local radio cannot be provided on the cheap, is concerned that the 10 Northern BBC local stations have had their budgets cut by a collective ú1 million meaning further substantial cuts in their individual budgets, which are already pared to the bone; and asks the BBC to withdraw the cuts and give an undertaking that the current level and quality of local programming will be maintained both now and in the future.
