Nhs Spending Priorities;amdt. Line 1:

EDM number 785A1 in 1994-95, proposed by Ann Winterton on 15/03/1995.

leave out from `House' to end and add `accepts the need for responsible stewardship of National Health Service resources; endorses the view that additional funds for the NHS should be directed first at patient care; deeply regrets the continuing diversion of manpower and money from essential, lifesaving and health promoting treatment into the bottomless coffers of social medicine; believes that taxpayers' money should not be used for purely cosmetic surgery, on the ever-spiralling cost of providing contraceptive drugs and devices to those who are otherwise perfectly able to pay for them and who use them merely for recreational sexual activity, or for those four million abortions, over 90 per cent of the total which have now been undertaken under the provisions of the Abortion Act, and which have been performed for purely social reasons at a cost of tens of millions of pounds annually; and urges the Secretary of State for Health to review the priorities of the Health Service and to ensure that public money is not in future squandered on unnecessary and in many cases morally repugnant courses of treatment for which there is no medical justification.'.

This is a ammendment to 785.
