Human Rights In Burma

EDM number 1068 in 1995-96, proposed by John Heppell on 27/06/1996.

That this House condemns the continuing human rights abuses in Burma, including the harassment, detention and murder of pro-democracy activists; further condemns the oil and gas companies Texaco (U.S.), Total (France), Premier (U.K.) and UNOCAL (U.S.) for their investment in Burma, which is bolstering the military dictatorship; is greatly alarmed by recent reports that Total (France) and UNOCAL (U.S.) are aware of the forced labour, arbitrary killings, rape and torture of innocent Burmese committed by Burma's military in the construction of the Gulf of Martabau to Thailand oil pipeline; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to impose strict economic sanctions against Burmua, to press for similar sanctions by the European Union and the United Nations and to discourage British citizens from holidaying in Burma until democracy is restored.
