Twentieth Anniversary Of The Equal Opportunities Commission

That this House congratulates the Equal Opportunities Commission on its 20th anniversary; recognises its important work over the last 20 years in fighting discrimination against women in the workplace and pays tribute to the valuable contribution it has made towards securing greater equality between men and women in this country; notes with grave concern the Government's proposal to cut the EOC's annual grant by ú500,000; believes that this 5 per cent. cut in the EOC's budgetwill seriously affect the range of services it provides to people seeking redress against discrimination and employers wishing to comply with the law; sees it as a step backwards in the campaign against discrimination against women and further evidence of the hypocrisy of a Government which claims to be committed to equal opportunities for men and women; and calls upon the Government to drop this proposal without delay.
