Protection Of Children: Tobacco Advertising, Promotion And Sponsorship

That this House notes that teenage smoking has risen sharply to 12 per cent. the highest level in a decade; further notes that smoking is the largest single preventable cause of mortality, which accounts for more than a third of deaths in middle age; believes that tobacco advertising and promotion has a far greater influence on children than on adults; notes that virtually half of all children aged 11 to 15 years believe they have seen tobacco advertised on television, which could only be attributable to tobacco sponsorship of sport; believes that the recently awarded contract to ITV to broadcast tobacco-sponsored sport effectively means the voluntary agreement on tobacco advertising is now meaningless; and calls on the Government to protect children from the influences of such promotion by banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
