Job Losses In The Newspaper Industry

EDM number 591 in 1995-96, proposed by Max Madden on 07/03/1996.

That this House expresses concern at the latest job losses at the Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers, in which more than 40 journalists are being made redundant, and the accompanying attack on trade union rights, including the de-recognition of the National Union of Journalists and the threatened dismissal of the Father of the NUJ Chapel; regrets the decision taken almost two years ago by the then President of the Board of Trade to waive the required reference to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission of the take-over bid by a consortium led by Mirror Group Newspapers; and seeks an urgent select committee inquiry into the financial and industrial problems of the national newspaper industry, which threaten more job cuts and newspaper closures this year.

This motion has been signed by a total of 44 MPs.
