Asbestos-Cement Water Pipes

That this House believes tha full information on any public health issue should be made available to honourable Members; notes the intention of the Department of the Environment (N.I.) not to publish in full, a report by the Water Research Centre on the proposed use of imported asbestos-cement pipes to carry drinking water from Mourne to Belfast; is aware that Germany, Italy, Holland and the Scandinavian countries have banned the use of asbestos-cement pipes for new installations; understands that there are perfectly safe competing alternative pipe materials available locally in Northern Ireland and Great Britain; and demands the suspension of the proposed use of asbestos-cement pipes in Northern Ireland until the matter is conclusively investigated and publicly debated.
