Demarcation Of Indigenous Lands In Brazil

That this House notes the recent legal changes made by the Brazilian government allowing challenges by loggers, miners, ranchers and others to the demarcation of tradition al indigenous lands in Brazil, which cover approximately 10 per cent. of Brazil's territory and vast areas of forest; expresses its deep concern that these changes could pose a threat both to Brazil's indigenous peoples and to the country's tropical rainforests; urges the Brazilian government to honour its constitutional commitment to demarcation, to accelerate the demarcation process and to ensure that indigenous lands already demarcated are not reduced as a result of the recent legal changes; and calls on the Brazilian government to ensure that all indigenous lands are extended full protection from invasion by outside interests.
