Mr Faraj Sarkuhi

EDM number 512 in 1996-97, proposed by Harry Cohen on 11/02/1997.

That this House is appalled and concerned at the treatment of magazine editor Mr Faraj Sarkuhi by the authorities in Iran; notes that he has been recognised by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience after being held unacknowledged in detention by the intelligence services, tortured, threatened and falsely accused of being a German spy; notes that Iran has an extremely bad record at intimidating and censoring writers and denying freedom of expression; and calls upon her Majesty's Government to make diplomatic efforts to secure Mr Sarkuhi's unconditional release, the return of his passport and the restoration of his right to leave Iran and for writers generally in Iran to enjoy greater freedom of expression without being at risk from the state.

This motion has been signed by a total of 22 MPs.
