Westminster Strategy And Councillor Peter Golds

EDM number 569 in 1996-97, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 24/02/1997.

That this House notes that on 14th May 1993 a panel of Brent councillors from which Opposition members had been excluded decided at a cost of ú30,000 to retain Westminster Strategy for the purpose of lobbying Her Majesty's Government to improve Brent's rate support grant allocation; notes that only Tory Council Leader, Bob Blackman and Councillor Peter Golds were in attendance at the panel and that when the decision of the panel was reported to the Council's Policies and Resources Sub Committee on 17th June, no reference was made to the attendance of Councillor Golds who is now employed by Westminster Strategy; further notes that the campaign to increase Brent's RSG involved Councillor Blackman writing to James Grey then special adviser at the Department of the Environment and now an employee of Westminster Strategy who was this year given the task of making representations to the Government on behalf of the now Labour-controlled Council; finally notes that although Westminster Strategy's annual bill to Brent Council has reached ú60,000 per annum, this year's lobbying by James Grey (prospective Conservative candidate for North Wiltshire) has been completely ineffective in preventing the dramatic reduction in Government funds for Brent Council; and therefore congratulates Brent Council on terminating the contract and invites Westminster Strategy to spell out publicly exactly what they did to assist Brent Council this year.
