Millennium Celebrations

EDM number 151 in 1997-98, proposed by John Austin on 19/06/1997.

That this House welcomes the commitment of the Prime Minister to the Millennium Exhibition at Greenwich as the focus for the United Kingdom celebrations of the millennium which will bring economic benefits for the whole country; notes that Greenwich was chosen not only because of its heritage and association with time but because of the potential for economic regeneration in an area which has lost more jobs than almost any other part of the country; and believes that this project will provide thousands of jobs in one of the most deprived areas of Britain and open up possibilities for further regeneration of the Thames Gateway, with improvements in transport infrastructure and the possibility of developing use of the Thames for transportation and leisure.
