Gabriel Communications Ltd

EDM number 1631 in 1997-98, proposed by Paul Goggins on 29/07/1998.

That this House notes with grave concern the decision of Manchester-based Gabriel Communications Ltd., which publishes The Universe and The Catholic Times, to axe 14 jobs, forcing 30 existing staff to apply for 16 new posts; affirms the view expressed by the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales in the document The Common Good that all workers have a right to trade union recognition; condemns the company's refusal to recognise the NUJ chapel; and calls on Gabriel Communications Ltd. to lift the threat to jobs immediately and consult meaningfully with the workforce to avoid the redundancies.

This motion has been signed by a total of 22 MPs.
