Greater Manchester Police Authority Estimated Budget 1999/2000

EDM number 1766 in 1997-98, proposed by Lawrence Cunliffe on 16/11/1998.

That this House views with alarm the ú18 million budget shortfall for 1999-2000 estimated by the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, resulting in the suggested overall reduction in support staff posts of 224.5 posts, and 90 per cent. of police stations closing outside of office hours; further notes that in addition a number of other areas, particularly scientific support services, will be affected by changes in working arrangements and possible reductions in shift and other allowances, thus having a major impact on the force; further fears the the effects of rising crime in the area; exhorts the Home Office to announce urgently the Greater Manchester Police Authority financial allocation for 1999-2000 in order to clarify the uncertainty about job security affecting police staff and public morale; and pleads with the Government to allow sufficient monies to avoid major damage to an already stretched police force.
