Scottish Local Government Boundary Review
EDM number 434 in 1997-98, proposed by Malcolm Bruce on 11/11/1997.
That this House calls on Her Majesty's Government to halt the Boundary Commission review of wards and ward boundaries for Scottish local authorities which would lead to the creation of many new councillors in areas such as Aberdeenshire, where the Boundary Commission are proposing to increase the numbers from 47 to 68, and Moray, where an increase from 18 to 26 is proposed; and notes that, if these reviews go ahead, it will inevitably lead to extra expenses, difficulties in finding suitable venues and divisions within communities at yet another insentitive and unneccessary boundary review, and will remove the main benefit of unitary authorities, namely, fewer councillors and greater efficiency.
