Birmingham Schools

EDM number 575 in 1997-98, proposed by Clare Short on 09/12/1997.

That this House congratulates Birmingham Education Authority schools on their performance in GCSE, which so far as improvement is concerned for the fifth year running shows the city is in the top 20 per cent of authorities whose pupils have achieved five or more grades A to C and the top 10 per cent of authorities whose pupils have achieved five or more grades A to G; commends the commitment and hard work of the staff of Birmingham schools and the steadfast support of the city councillors for the schools' budgets despite cuts in grants from the previous government; and calls on that same partnership of councillors, school staff, parents, governors and pupils to continue its hard work to show that despite the formidable challenges arising from Birmingham being the fifth poorest district in the United Kingdom, Birmingham schools will continue their remarkable record of transformation in standards of educational provision, aspiration, expectation and outcome.
