Middle East Peace Conference
EDM number 393 in 1998-99, proposed by Tony Benn on 04/03/1999.
That this House, noting the threat to peace in the Middle East, arising from the situation in Iraq and the continuation of Anglo-American air attacks there, the Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus and military intervention outside its own borders against the Kurds, the Israeli bombing and occupation of part of the Lebanon, and its failure to implement the peace agreement signed with the Palestinians; also noting the widespread denial of democracy and human rights and the acute human suffering and hardship that exists throughout the region, urges Her Majesty's Government to introduce an emergency resolution in the Security Council, proposing that a fully representative Middle Eastern Peace Conference be convened under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General, accompanied by a general ceasefire and cessation of all hostilities and the lifting of all sanctions on non-military equipment, at which all these issues could be discussed and resolved peacefully to meet the needs of all the people who live there.
