Anniversary Of The Dublin And Monaghan Bombings

EDM number 644 in 1998-99, proposed by Norman A Godman on 13/05/1999.

That this House commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the bombings in Dublin and Monaghan on 17th May 1974 which were the most devastating acts of violence in the Northern Ireland conflict; pays tribute to the courage and perseverence of the remaining victims and relatives of the 33 men and women killed in the atrocities and supports the justice of their demand for a thorough investigation of persistent allegations of collusion between security and intelligence services with Loyalist paramilitaries; notes that a former officer of the RUC Special Branch, Mr John Weir, has provided the Irish Government with the name of an RUC officer who owned the farm in which he alleges the bombs were assembled, has also provided the name of the RUC officers who, he alleges, set up these bombings and other killings, has alleged that an officer of the Ulster Defence Regiment participated in the bombing raid, has also alleged that the explosives used in the bombings were supplied by a UDR officer, and has further charged that the alleged perpetrators who names were supplied to the RUC and British Army intelligence within days of the bombings were never interviewed; and urges the Government to waive the prohibitions of the Official Secrets Act and agree to establish in co-operation with the Irish Government a full and independent investigation to establish the truth.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
