Cheltenham Art Gallery Centenary

EDM number 948 in 1998-99, proposed by Nigel Jones on 26/10/1999.

That this House congratulates Cheltenham Art Gallery on achieving its centenary; recalls its opening in 1899 to house the private art collection of Baron de Ferrieres who had been both Mayor and Member of Parliament for the town; notes that this collection forms the nucleus of the present extensive collections and led to the addition of a museum in 1907; appreciates the designated status conferred by the Secretary of State in 1998 on the Gallery's Arts and Crafts Movement Collection; and welcomes continuing support for the Gallery given by the Friends of the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museums and Cheltenham Borough Council.
