Treatment Of Asylum Seekers

EDM number 831 in 1999-00, proposed by Bob Laxton on 09/06/2000.

That this House notes that more than 100 asylum seekers have been sent to Derby from Kent County Council by West Midlands Housing Ltd; expresses its concern that such a large number of asylum seekers could be transferred to Derby without the prior knowledge or consent of the local authority; regrets that as a consequence the asylum seekers are having to live in substandard unfit accommodation; notes that this practice does not give asylum seekers use of good services provided by local authorities, such as translation, education, housing and other essential services; and calls on the Government to take action against Kent County Council over their use of West Midlands Housing Ltd. in order that this situation does not arise again.

This motion has been signed by a total of 11 MPs.
