Education In The Ribble Valley

EDM number 95 in 1999-00, proposed by Nigel Evans on 25/11/1999.

That this House condemns Lancashire County Council for denying children in the Ribble Valley the right to go to a school in the Ribble Valley; notes that Lancashire County Council is a Labour-controlled council, which puts dogma and ideology at the forefront of its policy on education; further notes that many children will be bussed around Lancashire in the dark to get to school many miles away from their home; calls on Lancashire County Council to reverse its policy on bussing children away from their local schools and instead make school places available so that children living in the Ribble Valley are able to go to schools in the Ribble Valley; and notes that the Labour-controlled county council has refused to allow the local grammar school, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, a beacon school, to expand by 30 places to accommodate the necessary places, because it is a selective grammar school even though all the extra places would be for Ribble Valley children.
