EUROPEAN CHILDREN'S TRUST;Amdt. line 1:

EDM number 142A1 in 2000-01, proposed by Andrew Rowe on 27/02/2001.

leave out from 'House' to end and add 'calls on the Home Secretary to direct the Charity Commission to report on "new allegations which have recently come to light" regarding the European Children's Trust (formerly the Romanian Orphanage trust) mentioned by the Home Department in its answer to a written question by the Hon. Member for Thanet North on 6 March 2000; and, mindful of allegations that followed an investigation in 1998 in which the Trust was cleared by the Charity Commission of financial impropriety, draws attention to the article in the Sunday Mail, 5 March 2000, that highlighted the shameful conditions in the Casa De Copii Orphanage, Hincesti, Moldova that four years previously had been the subject of an emergency appeal which resulted in the English Football team, the Football Association, readers of the Daily Mail and Blue Peter viewers donating more than ú6 million to a relief operation; acknowledges that charity officials said this would transform forever the Orphanage and the lives of its helpless occupants, but notes that 35 handicapped girls aged between 4-17 were discovered by British aid workers living in unimaginable filth in rat-infested mattresses two years after the Appeal in December 1998; and requests that the European Children's Trust makes a public statement as to the current position, explaining why the Trust abandoned the children of the Casa De Copii Orphanage, and what happened to the funds raised in Britain as a result of the appeal to the public.'

This is a ammendment to 142.
