Aftermath Of Floods In Lewes

EDM number 574 in 2000-01, proposed by Norman Baker on 09/04/2001.

That this House recalls the very significant damage caused to the fabric of the town of Lewes in last October's floods, where hundreds of houses were rendered uninhabitable and many remain so to this day, and where large numbers of businesses were forced to close, and some remain so to this day; regrets that it has taken six months for the Environment Agency commissioned report into the cause of the floods to be produced; further regrets that this Report, despite its detailed analysis of the causes, identifies no specific measures to improve flood defences for the town; calls on the Environment Agency to undertake without further delay those minor works that will be required whatever long-term solution is arrived at, and to produce as a matter of urgency specific proposals to improve markedly the flood defences of the town, using external consultants if necessary; and further calls on the Government to guarantee that it will provide monies at the earliest possible opportunity to implement the preferred scheme.
