Carcasses Buried In Landfill Sites

EDM number 633 in 2000-01, proposed by Harry Barnes on 02/05/2001.

That this House notes that many communities, such as those surrounding Erin Void at Staveley in Derbyshire, have suffered excessive disruption including serious discomfort from nauseating smells under the policy of burying animal carcasses at local landfill sites; believes that the use of the worst affected sites should now end and that neighbouring communities should be compensated for the great inconvenience they have suffered; notes that one method of compensation is through the use of local projects which, apart from funding out of operators' profits, can be financed under landfill tax credits; and believes that the maximum credits which can be claimed under this scheme should, therefore, be extended from 20 per cent. to 100 per cent. where communities have experienced adverse conditions.
