Saville Inquiry

EDM number 1720 in 2001-02, proposed by Kevin McNamara on 24/09/2002.

That this House notes that the Saville Inquiry has so far heard more than 500 witnesses give evidence in open court, in full public view and under careful cross examination tell, to the best of their ability after 30 years, their truthful and candid recollections of the events and circumstances surrounding Bloody Sunday, when 14 civil rights protestors lost their lives and many more were injured; regrets that the open and transparent search for the truth has been marred by demands for witness screening and anonymity, persistent legal challenges to the decisions of the Inquiry, destruction and non-disclosure of material evidence and forced re-location of hearings to London hindering the exercise of the right of the bereaved and the survivors alike to bear witness to the truth; nevertheless encourages all those with evidence to come forward; urges the Government tirelessly to promote confidence in the Inquiry, thoroughly to investigate allegations of destruction of evidence, to foreswear the use of public interest immunity and fully to disclose all material documentation.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
