Nuclear Escalation And Iraq
EDM number 1855 in 2001-02, proposed by Llew Smith on 05/11/2002.
That this House commends the article by Dr Rowan Williams, the next Archbishop of Canterbury, in the Daily Telegraph on 5th November; agrees with his analysis that military conflict initiated by the United States with United Kingdom support against Iraq could escalate into a nuclear conflict involving Israel; recognises with horror the huge numbers of innocent civilians and military conscripts who would die if nuclear weapons were exploded over or near densely populated cities in the middle east; further recognises that radioactively contaminated clouds show no respect for national borders, as the Chernobyl accident showed; and calls for all efforts be made to reach a diplomatic solution to the Iraq crisis.
