Support For Separatism By The Welsh Nationalists

EDM number 488 in 2001-02, proposed by Llew Smith on 28/11/2001.

That this House notes that the ultimate aim of the Welsh Nationalists is to promote separatism and to achieve independence while currently denying this to be their aim; believes that this once again became obvious when their leader, Ieuan Wyn Jones, declared 'self government for Wales was the only answer' but was forced to change this because Cynog Dafis exposed this myth when admitting that 'self government' is 'the status that used to be called independence'; further notes that Ieuan Wyn Jones' present claim that their aim was not 'self government', but 'full national status' was further exposed at their conference on 24th November, by one of the delegates, David Senior, when referring to independence, said, 'apparently it means the same as full national status, but you see I can't say it, because it is not our policy... Hang on, if it means the same thing, it is our policy and therefore I can say it'; further notes that the claim by Ieuan Wyn Jones that they did not support independence was further undermined by statements made by former leaders of the Welsh Nationalist Party, including Dafydd Elis Thomas, who demanded 'an independent Welsh Government answerable to the people of Wales' further declaring, with Dafydd Wigley that 'an independent Wales would withdraw from NATO'; and condemns attempts by current Welsh Nationalist politicians to hoodwink the public, denying their historial aim summed up by Saunders Lewis, a former leader and founder member, in 1930, as being to 'break every link with the Parliament in England.'.

This motion has been signed by a total of 24 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
