Conduct Of The Audit Commission

EDM number 108 in 2002-03, proposed by Kevin McNamara on 14/11/2002.

That this House commends the action taken by 27 current and former councillors of Hull City Council who have signed a petition to the Audit Commission requesting that the Audit Commission pass any evidence in its possession of bullying by council members to the Standards Committee at Hull City Council, or any other appropriate body so they may see and challenge the evidence upon which such a smear is based which tarnishes their reputations and integrity and places a dark cloud over their many years in public life; regrets that two such former smeared councillors have since died and trust that their reputations will be posthumously restored; notes with regret that Sir Andrew Foster in his letter of 14th October, to the former Leader of Hull City Council rejected this suggestion and has also stated that further correspondence on this subject would not serve any useful purpose; and wonders how he would feel if at the end of his career in public life nameless people accused him of tolerating a culture of bullying within the Audit Commission and he was denied the opportunity to confront his accusers, rebut their evidence and restore his reputation and having been denied natural justice he would be content with the situation in which the Audit Commission, in effect, slams the door on disclosing any evidence upon which such a serious charge was based and whether he would be satisfied with the suggestion that any further correspondence on the subject would not serve any useful purpose.

This motion has been signed by a total of 4 MPs.
