Cost Of Press Cuttings Services In Government

EDM number 1445 in 2010-12, proposed by Robert Halfon on 10/02/2011.
Categorised under the topic of Public expenditure.

That this House regrets that more than 16,200,000 was spent over the last few years by Government departments on press cutting services; notes that by 2009 the cost had grown to almost 3 million each year for a service that could be provided free through an online alert, with a total revealed spend of 1,946,000 at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 380,749 at the Ministry of Justice, 1,123,324 at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, 917,545 at the Department of Health, 47,942 at the Department for International Development, 2,049,000 at the Department for Transport, 900,020 at the Department for Work and Pensions, 22,695 at the Wales Office, 113,218 at the Scotland Office, 842,000 at the Ministry of Defence, 1,087,000 at the Home Office, 2,317,953 at the Treasury, 37,213 at the Government Equalities Office, 2,070,362 at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, 230,360 at the Attorney General's Office, 212,544 at the Department for Energy and Climate Change,983,072 at the Department for Communities and Local Government, 455,000 at the Department for Education and 499,188 at the Department for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport; further notes that thisis just the tip of the iceberg compared to press cuttings expenditure in local government, NHS trusts and hospitals, police and fire authorities, and the wider public sector; and welcomes the cuts in unnecessary adminstrative spending by the present Government in order to protect frontline services, but calls on the Government to go further and scrap spending on press cuttings services immediatley.
